SELF-MANAGED SUPER FUNDS (SMSF) ANNUAL STATISTICS OVERVIEW

The ATO has released their latest annual statistical overview on self-managed super funds (SMSFs). This covers the 2020–21 financial year with the main source of data being SMSF annual returns.
Highlights include:
• Over 603,000 SMSFs holding $869 billion in assets, with more than 1.1 million SMSF members, as at 30 June 2022.
• SMSFs had assets of almost $1.5 million on average in 2020–21, up 15% from the previous year.
• 64% of SMSFs have existed for more than 10 years.
• 45% of SMSFs had assets between $200,001 and $1 million.
• The median age of SMSF members of newly established funds in 2020–21 was 46.
• Gender balance - 47% of members were female and 53% male as at 30 June 2022.
