ASIC takes action against 36 SMSF auditors as regulatory focus continues - what accounting firms need to know
ASIC has taken administrative action against 36 approved self managed superannuation fund auditors between January and June 2026, bringing the total number of actions against SMSF auditors during the 2025 to 2026 financial year to 64.

For accounting firms working with SMSF clients, the announcement reinforces the importance of working with an SMSF auditor who understands and meets their professional and regulatory obligations.
At Superannuation Audit Services, we recognise the important role SMSF auditors play in supporting confidence and trust across the SMSF sector. ASIC's latest enforcement activity highlights the importance of maintaining appropriate standards when selecting an SMSF audit provider for your clients.
36 SMSF auditors faced action between January and June 2026
According to ASIC, the 36 administrative actions taken during the first half of 2026 related to a range of professional obligations for approved SMSF auditors.
The actions included:
4 SMSF auditors being disqualified
3 SMSF auditors being suspended
8 SMSF auditors having additional conditions imposed on their registrations
21 SMSF auditors having their registrations cancelled
ASIC stated that the actions addressed serious breaches of auditor obligations.
The breaches included failing to maintain independence, non compliance with auditing and assurance standards, non compliance with continuing professional development requirements, failing to maintain practical experience, failing to lodge annual statements, and not being a fit and proper person to remain registered as an approved SMSF auditor.
ASIC took 64 actions against SMSF auditors during FY26
The latest enforcement activity brings ASIC's total number of SMSF auditor administrative decisions between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026 to 64.
Across the financial year, ASIC reported:
8 SMSF auditors were disqualified
3 SMSF auditors were suspended
10 SMSF auditors had additional conditions imposed on their registrations
43 SMSF auditors had their registrations cancelled
ASIC noted that the total represents a year on year increase in the number of actions taken against SMSF auditors.
Why SMSF auditor standards matter to accounting firms
SMSF auditors play an important role within the SMSF sector. ASIC stated that SMSF auditors are responsible for promoting confidence and instilling trust in the entire SMSF sector.
This is particularly relevant for accounting firms managing SMSF clients. The SMSF auditor is an important part of the professional team supporting the fund, making the quality and compliance of the audit process an important consideration.
ASIC's enforcement activity demonstrates that SMSF auditor obligations extend beyond completing an audit. Approved SMSF auditors must also meet requirements relating to independence, auditing and assurance standards, continuing professional development, practical experience and registration obligations.
What the ASIC action means for SMSF clients
For accounting firms, ASIC's announcement provides a timely reminder to consider the SMSF audit providers being used for their clients.
An effective SMSF audit process requires an auditor to meet their professional obligations while maintaining the standards expected of an approved SMSF auditor.
ASIC and the Australian Taxation Office work closely together as co regulators of SMSF auditors. ASIC monitors the SMSF auditor population for non compliance with registration obligations, while the ATO monitors SMSF auditor conduct and may refer matters to ASIC.
ASIC can take several forms of regulatory action
ASIC can take a number of actions where an approved SMSF auditor does not meet their obligations.
These include:
Disqualifying an SMSF auditor
Suspending an SMSF auditor
Imposing conditions on an SMSF auditor's registration
Cancelling an SMSF auditor's registration
SMSF auditors have the right to seek a review of ASIC decisions relating to their registration under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993.
