The latest ATO SMSF quarterly statistics show continued growth across the sector, with more SMSFs, more members and more than $1.1 trillion in estimated assets.


The June 2026 ATO SMSF quarterly statistics provide a snapshot of a sector that continued to expand throughout the 2025 to 2026 financial year.


At June 2026, Australia had 680,301 SMSFs, with 1,246,552 members and estimated total SMSF assets of approximately $1.107 trillion.


For accounting firms working with SMSFs, the figures provide useful insight into the size of the sector, investment allocations and the profile of members entering the SMSF population.

SMSF Numbers Continue to Increase


The number of SMSFs increased from 633,292 in June 2025 to 680,301 in June 2026, an increase of approximately 7.4%.


There were 52,020 new SMSFs established during the 2025 to 2026 financial year, compared with 42,336 during the previous year. This represents an increase of approximately 22.9%.

The June 2026 quarter alone saw 12,264 new SMSFs enter the system.


SMSF membership also increased, rising from 1,161,024 members in June 2025 to 1,246,552 members in June 2026.


SMSF Assets Exceed $1.1 Trillion


Estimated total SMSF assets reached approximately $1.107 trillion at June 2026, compared with approximately $1.069 trillion at June 2025.


Listed shares remained the largest SMSF asset class, representing around 25.5% of total assets, with approximately $282.8 billion invested.


Cash and term deposits remained the second largest asset class at approximately $180.6 billion, representing around 16.3% of SMSF assets.


Other significant asset classes included:

Unlisted trusts: approximately $137.3 billion Non residential real property: approximately $115.5 billion Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements: $83.8 billion Residential real property: $60.9 billion Overseas shares: $23.0 billion Crypto assets: $5.0 billion


Crypto assets recorded a small decline from approximately $5.03 billion in March 2026 to $5.01 billion in June 2026, while overseas share holdings increased from approximately $22.2 billion to $23.0 billion over the quarter.


Who Is Joining the SMSF Sector?


The ATO statistics also provide an insight into the demographics of SMSF members.


Approximately 73.8% of existing SMSF members were aged 50 or above. However, younger members represented a significant proportion of new entrants during the June 2026 quarter.

Members aged 35 to 44 accounted for 39.1% of new SMSF members, making this the largest age group among new entrants.


Members aged 45 to 49 represented 18.1%, while those aged 50 to 54 represented 13.8%.

The income profile of new members also varied. The largest income group was those earning $100,000 to $150,000, representing 25.7% of new members.
